The God-Serpent
Since writing the book "Waking the Dragons," the dragon has always followed me as an alchemical guide uniting serpent and eagle, underworld and upperworld, the light hemisphere and the dark. I see the dragon-image as integration: the moment two opposing forces stop fighting and the result is the image of the serpent biting its own tail.
In this spirit, I'm setting up a two hour work session to journey into the dragon's lair through story and inquiry, this will be an adventure to look for the gold and the treasure this serpent guards close.
We will ask - what is the gold?
When we follow the dragon story, we have to sit with these questions: what is being guarded, and why is it precious that a dragon is set to protect it?
We will introduce this as an alchemical question to carry with us into the lair. What if the gold is not a material winning, but an inner substance, a “pagan” lost part of ourselves that we have buried long ago in our memories, what if the dragons and the monsters we have created in the caves, wells and burial grounds are the remnants of the ancient Gods(esses) many of us have lost? Are they waiting for us to unearth their richness?
The Serpent's Runes
There about 6,000 rune stones across Scandinavia, and until this day, the runes are etched within the dragon's back. Reading a rune stone means tracing the body of the dragon, rune by rune, starting from the from head to tail.
We will study this art and learn the “urnes” style, how to paint and draw it and then we will add our voices and use wyrd-songs (rune-chanting) as a way of walking the serpent's body, letting the rune-sounds guide us through the labyrinthine paths, toward the place where the tail meets the mouth, to the heart of the cave, the place of transformation.
The Old Stories
I will also bring some of the origin stories of dragons, to look for dragon-bones underneath the landscape where we live and in ourselves: the stories will be Tiamat, the Drakaina, the primordial Goddess who mothered the first dragons. The Midgard Serpent, Jörmungandr, vast enough to encircle the whole world and Fafnir, the man-dragon, obsessed by wealth and coiled around his hoard.
